The Spanish language is among the Romance languages. Spanish language is the second behind Mandarin in terms of its number of native speakers worldwide, because approximately 500 million people speak Spanish as a native language.   

According to statistics there are about 548 million Spanish speakers who speak Spanish as a first or second language. Also, there are about 20 million students of Spanish as foreign language.

Why you have to learn Spanish?


Spanish is among the most spoken languages on earth. Spanish is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. Also, Spanish language also is among the official languages of European Union, Mercosur and Pacific Alliance. In case you live or you want to travel in Europe, the Spanish language is spoken by 15% of all Europeans.

Spanish is the most popular second language learned by native speakers of American English. The study of Spanish as a foreign language has grown significantly, in part of the growing populations and the development of many Spanish – speaking countries of South America and the growing of tourist industry in these countries.

In the last years, Spanish is the most widely understood language in the Western Hemisphere. There are native Spanish speakers from Argentina (Patagonia) to Canada and since the 21st century the Spanish language superseded French as the second – most – studied language and the second language in international communication, after English.

Eight months ago, Amanda Macias and Gus Lubin published on LIFE magazine an article with the title “Six reasons why everyone should learn Spanish”.

According to them, you should learn Spanish “estudiar Espanol”, because:

  1. Spanish isn’t a foreign language anymore

The increase of Spanish speaking population in United States is the main reason. According to Pew Research Center, there are about 37.6 million people in the United States who speak Spanish and analysts predict the Latino population will reach approximately 128,8 million by 2060. United States in 2060 will be the largest Spanish speaking country in the world. Now days the proportion of Spanish speakers in United States is 16%, according to forecasts the Spanish speakers will be 30% by 2050.

  1. Learning Spanish will help your career

The growth and development of Spanish speaking economies will be the fundamental reason for an increase in direct investments in Latin America by US companies. Also, there is a huge demand in United States for Spanish – speakers in nursing, construction management and media. The Spanish speaking market will represent $ 1,5 trillion in purchasing power in U.S. by 2015.

  1. Learning Spanish will unlock a world of travel destinations

What about a trip in Cancun, Mexico! Native Spanish speakers live in many famous tourist destinations from Barcelona to Isla Margarita in Venezuela, from Ibiza to Manila (Philippines).

  1. You can read amazing books and watch unforgettable films in Spanish

According to Guardian newspaper the world’s best book is “Don Quixote”, by novelist Miguel de Cervantes. Other famous Spanish speaking authors are the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, the Colombia Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Roberto Bolano, Mario Vargas Liosa and many, many others.  Film makers as Pedro Almodovar, Alfonso Cuaron, Guilermo Del Toro are the main representatives of Spanish – language cinema.

  1. Spanish is easy to learn

Russian language has a different alphabet. French language has a different pronunciation and Japanese is among the most difficult languages. On the other hand, Spanish is very easy and very colorful language. Spanish is completely phonetic and very easy to pronounce. The basic grammar of Spanish language is very easy to learn and many vocabulary words are similar to English.

  1. Even the British learn Spanish

The writers mention a study of British Council, with title “Future languages”. According to British Council the most important foreign languages in the following decades will be Spanish, Arabic, France and Mandarin. The above mentioned study has estimated economic, diplomatic, demographic and political factors.

For me the main reasons to study and learn Spanish are the following


  1. Spanish is like music

In my opinion Spanish language has an harmony like music. The pronouncing of Spanish words is so “colorful”, so “unique” and “exotic”. Spanish is a very vivid language. For me Spanish is a window in my thinking. I dare to say that Spanish is like a rainbow which connects dreams with reality. Is light!

  1. Learning Spanish is fun

Learning language can be very difficult and can cause a lot of trouble if you take the wrong turn. Spanish is easy language. Every day, every hour and every moment when you are studying Spanish receive it as a game. At the end of day, by learning another language you are investing on yourself.

  1. Learning Spanish will expand your universe

Only sly is the limit! Learn Spanish go for it. Always, to be young as your dreams. There are 500 million Spanish speakers. They want to communicate with people like you. They want to ask, to learn, to buy, to travel, to invest and to love. By learning Spanish you expand your abilities to reach these people. Be a part in our word. Think globally act locally. Our word is changing; Spanish will be the most important language in few decades. Don’t lose this party, you are invited.

  1. Learn foreign languages to protect my mental health

According to scientific studies people who know two languages reduces the change to develop dementia, including Alzheimer ’s disease. The scientific hypothesis according to which bilingualism enhances mental abilities in both children and older adults is tested and proofed true. By studying foreign languages you are improving your memory and you can slow the majority of age – related decline in mental acuity. Also, by studying a foreign language you are getting smarter. Your critical thinking skills will be improved as you study a foreign language. By learning a foreign language you view things through different lens and from different optical views.

They use to say. If you speak another foreign language, you are thinking with two minds!

Finally, as a Speaker of five languages I dare to say that beyond all the above learning a foreign language can bust your creativity.
